From the get-go I've always wanted this blog to be several things. Of course it's a great record of how I did things for my own purposes; it also provides some justification for the eventual value assigned for insurance purposes; but it also serves as a sort of yardstick for the amount and type of work required for anyone contemplating building a replica of their own.
Sure… my car may not be a typical build, but it is a point on a continuum that is very sparsely documented on the internet. I haven’t yet found any credible or detailed accounts on-line of how much time it’s taken to build any other replica so far. So this may be a first. Hopefully it will inspire rather than turn away prospective new-comers to our hobby.
Few people can say they’ve spent more than 6000 hours over the past dozen or so years doing something they absolutely love. I can. And so I share this graph as part of the bigger picture of what it takes to build a quality replica.

The above graph shows every hour I’ve spent working on this car, less the time it took to create this blog. Of course I’ve also documented what I did each hour too, so at some point I may break the data down into the hours spent, say, designing and fabricating the rear suspension. Lots of time was spent simply with a chair in front of the car brainstorming ways to solve problems.
I’m a hobby farmer though, so there are times of the year that I simply can’t afford to work on the car. So I thought it might be interesting to plot what months of the year were the “most” versus ”least” productive, averaged over the entire 15 years so far. Clearly the winter months are the most productive:
So there you have it… I’m sure for some this will be a real eye-opener, but others in-the-know will nod their heads and understand perfectly where the time goes.
I'll update the graphs semi-regularly.
